Rain, no rain, rain…what’s next?

All that rain in the spring made the lawn mowers hum...

All that rain in the spring made the lawn mowers hum…

It seems impossible to  satisfy the gardeners or farmers (so what’s new?) around central Illinois this past few months. We had such bad drought through last season in the Champaign Urbana area. Then the heavy and consistent rains stopped planting. Then it dried out–the Illinois Water Survey all the while was keeping us posted on how unusual all of this is.  I even saw a guy in west Champaign watering his rain garden!

Then starting some 10 days ago the heavens (do we blame God for this or is it climate change?) opened up and once again we are soaked. As the sump pumps drone and the rain gardens drain (“derain”) we once again return to the routine of mowing those lawns three times a week.

I predict dry weather…at least drier!

What plant is this?

For you gardeners and botanists out there I have a question. This delightful onion type plant keeps popping up each year around the edges of our yard. It shoots up in June and produces this delightful bloom–and makes seed.

What is it?
